Milan has style in a bold, confident, no-nonsense like manner with a touch of flash. The city has beautiful architecture, the food is… in typical italian style… delicious and the coffee now holds the crown for the best cappuccino we have ever tasted!
If you like your luxury fashion, Milan is the perfect place to find it. Store fronts showcasing beautiful designs framed in windows that draw you in with intrigue and impact, taking you inside where you are treated to a place that is dedicated to giving you the quality shopping experience you expect. Visit shopping areas Via Montenapoleone, Via Manzoni, Via Sant’Andrea and Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II for Milan’s luxury fashion favourites.
The capital houses some of its famous luxurious designer brands in the grand design that is Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the best shopping arcade we have come across so far. It is known fondly as “the living room of Milan” since it is a preferred place to meet. It is grand but still elegant, has a domed glass roof, Prada, Mosaics, Louis Vuitton, statues, Gucci, and leads you out in to Piazza del Duomo where you are faced with the beauty of Duomo di Milano… need we say more.
Milan will be showcased to the world this year as it plays host to the Universal Exposition from 1st May until 31st October 2015. Italy’s fashion giants Prada and Versace have come together to finance the restoration of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II in time for the event, which will see an estimated 20 million visitors welcomed in to the city.
The most beautiful of all the architecture has to be the Duomo (cathedral). Milan’s cathedral is the central point in the city for tourists, with surrounding cobbled roads leading you straight to it, as if pointing you in the right direction. A bustling square surrounds the Duomo filled with people, cafe’s, markets, shops and restaurants. This must be the meeting point for 99.9% of tourists in Milan! The Duomo is un-missable, dazzling and well worth a look inside.
The duomo is constructed out of Candoglia marble, topped with marble spires and pinnacles (135 of them!) and Madonnina, know as the city’s protector. The beautiful giant stained glass windows are mesmerising and inside you can see the detail of the marble art within every part of the Duomo di Milano.
Milan has plenty on offer for a fabulous city break and you will find there are events throughout the year that are worth looking up before you book your flights. Big favourites are the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Furniture Fair) in April and the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! street market in December. You will find a good guide to many more events at www.timeout.com.
